intricately linked, and it is only by using all the information that they communicate to us that we can make sense of the world. ideally these senses work in harmony as we develop and learn, but any imbalance in one or more of these sensory pathways creates difficulty in integrating information. this can lead to learning challenges which may result in confusing or upsetting behaviour, visual problems in the classroom or reading and aversion to light or noise. there may also be problems with clumsiness, fine motor skills and balance, fidgety behaviour and mood swings. our team of experts specialises in helping children with these kind of visual and auditory processing difficulties, as well as reflex, balance and coordination issues, using an integrated, holistic approach. more about the team… refer a child sensory training sensory training involves creating a series of exercises and physical activities that are designed to regulate sensory input which, when practiced every day, can have significant impact on wellbeing and behaviour. our team will work with the child and their caregivers to create therapies and techniques that address their specific difficulties and can advise on lifestyle changes, calming methods and sensory ‘re-set’ exercises that can help a child self-comfort. find out more parents who wish to refer their child: it may just be a vague sense that something isn’t quite right, or you may have a firm diagnosis of your child’s difficulties. either way the following lists of things to look out for in your child can make the decision to seek therapy clearer. information for parents and guardians problems to look out for... when several difficulties are found they could be: visual difficulties the primary source of information about the world around you is your vision. even a small imbalance in this system can lead to big difficulties in how you view the world. if you notice your child has any of the following difficulties it may be that they are having trouble processing visual information and would benefit from sensory processingtherapy: blurring of words when reading blinks or rubs eyes a lot gets rapidly tired at school and often exhausted at end of school day difficulties with copying from the blackboard or book loss of concentration, short attention span reading accuracy and speed below chronological age loses place or line when reading misses out words or letters when reading often has to use finger as a marker to keep place reverses letters and numbers mirror writing spells phonetically poor visual memory struggles with maths covers one eye when reading moves head when reading homework takes longer than it should struggles to understand what has been read contact us if your child is experiencing some of the problems listed here. find out more auditory difficulties similar to the way your brain makes sense of your vision, it also has to coordinate the information coming through your hearing, often linking it to what you are seeing. difficulties with auditory processes can have a detrimental effect on a child’s learning. if you notice that your child has any of the following reactions, contact us: hypersensitivity to sounds difficulty picking up verbal info particularly in background noise dislike of loud noises e.g. hand dryers/parties finds listening difficult easily distracted in loud environments often needs info repeating mishears words does not understand what they have heard easily forgets what they have heard difficulty remembering directions spelling difficulties difficulty expressing ideas difficulties locating position of sound contact us if your child is experiencing some of the problems listed here. find out more physical difficulties when we’re born we are equipped with a set of reflexes to help us deal with our new environment. as we grow and develop, typically these reflexes are lost or suppressed. if a child has difficulty inhibiting these primitive reflexes, then motor development may be delayed. this can present itself as any of the following symptoms: poor co-ordination poor balance poor fine motor skills e.g. handwriting / using cutlery confuses right and left past age 7 (and sometimes up and down.) poor posture when working poor at ball skills and team games difficulties learning to ride a bike difficulties tying shoe laces . poor posture when working contact us if your child is experiencing some of the problems listed here. find out more frequently asked questions how long does each session last? initial assessments take an hour. this will be followed by either a 60-minute reflex assessment or a 30-minute visual/auditory follow-up session as required, within a few days. will my child’s school help with the suggested exercises? different schools show different levels of cooperation. we always recommend that you pass our findings onto your child’s school or teacher so that they can be made aware of the difficulties and what they can do to support you and your child as much as possible. how often do we need to do the exercises? we find that the best results come from working with your child to do the exercises every day. we will help you find ways to integrate the therapies into your daily lives so that they can be as effective as possible. how long do we need to do the exercise programmes for? each child is different, and many things can affect the results of the therapy, such as the regularity of completing the exercisesand the level of severity of the difficulties. however, we are confident that the training can have long-lasting benefits when followed correctly. is there parking at the centre? there are disabled parking spaces at the centre for those with a visible disabled parking badge, but we would recommend you call wellington house reception before your visit to make sure that there is a space free. otherwise there is a public car park two minutes’ walk away. please see details here. what will i receive at the end of the initial assessment? at the end of the initial assessment you will receive a full written report with details of the exercises for you to continue at home and suggested next steps. how much will i have to pay? our usual initial assessment and follow-up appointment fees are listed here , or contact us for a chat if you have any questions. how can i find out more? you can read more about the latest research and methods in sensory training in the more information section, but please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or queries. children's & parents stories coming soon… click here for our parent and guardian questionnaire. close healthcare professionals and teachers who wish to refer a child: simply email the contact details of the family of the child you are concerned about to [email protected] with a description of the difficulties the child is experiencing. teachers, if you could also complete the school questionnaire here it would be
